"All that was running through my mind was what if something like that happened in Decatur."

DECATUR, Ga. - Hundreds of students participated in a school walkout demonstration at Decatur High School.

Students started planning their walkout just a few days ago after talking with school administrators on the most effective way to go about it. The students decided not to leave the campus but made a strong statement with the help of community members who kicked off the event on the downtown square.

"We're committed,” said one organizer. “We're not going to stop. This is just the beginning.”

"I thought was really interesting to see 17 minutes of people in complete silence,” said Niki Gajjar. “And most of the teenagers were not on their phones or chatting with someone else."

"Something like what happened in Parkland can happen here. Parkland was a really safe community. I think there are a lot of parallels between here and Decatur. It's so crazy to me, that it's so easy for someone to get a gun.
