A female drug suspect was shot several times by police Thursday morning while they were trying to serve her with a warrant.
According to Gwinnett police, SWAT units were serving drug-related warrants on the 2000 block of Buford Dam Road near Shadburn Ferry Road around 6 am. Police said the woman fired at least two rounds at a SWAT officer, who was not hit by the rounds but did suffer minor injuries to his arm from glass or shrapnel.
“We know that she fired at least two rounds at one of our SWAT officers, and he was able to return fire, striking her multiple times,” said Cpl. Michele Pihera.
SWAT medics took the female outside to a waiting ambulance. She was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville with very serious injuries.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, is in critical condition.
In 2015 the GBI investigated 59 “officer use of force” cases across the state, and 83 cases in 2016. So far this year, that number is 72, and eight of those are just within the last 10 days, a correction from earlier when officials with the GBI initially said that number was 10.
“It speaks to the level of violence which exists in our culture,” said GBI Director Vernon Keenan. “ When the investigative process is over and the prosecutor has reviewed and made a decision, the vast majority of these cases are legally justified uses of force. Others are controversial.”
