DULUTH, Ga. – A 25-year-old man has been convicted after about six hours of jury deliberation in a 2017 double murder.

In January of 2017, Davon Jones was arrested and charged with multiple counts after two of his father's friends were found shot at a home in the 2100 block of Hopkins Mill Lane in Duluth.

When police arrived at the home on January 22, 2017, they found Charles Tyree dead and Michael Liberty critically injured after both were shot in the head. Liberty later died on the way to the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Police said Tyree and Liberty were at the home visiting David Jones, Davon’s father. They were there to help fix Davon’s car in the garage, according to the Gwinnett County district attorney.

Shortly after the victims arrived, officials said Davon pulled a gun from his waistband and fired two shots hitting both Tyree and Liberty in the head.

Davon then took the gun and ran from the scene. He wasn't caught until the next morning after his father called the police to turn Davon in.

Davon Dayron Jones was arrested and charges with two counts of felony murder.

Davon claimed the shooting was an accident but investigators said evidence indicated he intentionally shot both men, according to the district attorney.

During the trial, Gwinnett County Police Department Sergeant Jason Teague testified about the gun and the recoil expected from the weapon. This led the jury to conclude that the trajectories of the bullets could not have happened from an accidental discharge.

While Davon had made “numerous inconsistent statements” about firing the gun, witnesses told the court Davon was “very familiar with guns,” according to the district attorney.

After approximately six hours of deliberation, the jury acquitted Davon of the malice murder of Tyree but convicted him of felony murder of Tyree. Davon was convicted of both the malice murder and felony murder of Liberty.

His sentencing is delayed until April 27.
