"We will not go quietly. We will not go gently into the good night."
Brandon Bar wrote those words the day he discovered his best friend, a U.S. Marine, was found dead in a Belize field. The circumstances surrounding the death of Drew Devoursney and his girlfriend Francesca Matus are a mystery Brandon is determined to uncover.
Drew and Brandon met serving together in Fallujah in 2004. In 2016, Drew completed diving school and moved to Corozal, Belize. The town of just over 20,000 was gaining a reputation as a growing community of expatriates.
While there is no official travel warning for Belize, the U.S. Department of State does warn the country is "rated high for crime" and "criminals frequently target tourists, including those at resorts and on the roads and riverways". Perhaps most daunting to Drew's family, this additional warning: "The majority of crimes remain unresolved and unprosecuted. A lack of capacity, resources, and training impedes the ability of local police to effectively investigate crime and apprehend serious offenders."
Drew's family and friends are his death will have answers. On a GoFundMe page, Brandon has set a goal to raise $20,000 for a private investigator and other resources to track down those answers.
"I will not let anyone to allow his death be the end of it all. Today is the day where I demand answers to so many questions all of us have about this whole mysterious abduction and their senseless deaths," he wrote.
