FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — A 63-year-old man has died after police say he was struck by a motorist in Fayette County on Tuesday night. Now, police believe they've identified a person of interest.

Police said that Sherlock McCall was struck while walking in the area of North Jeff Davis Drive near Jefferson Avenue. Police said he was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. McCall's family has been notified of the death and police are still investigating the crash.

Police believe the crash happened around 9 p.m. as McCall was apparently trying to cross North Jeff Davis Drive.

While the circumstances leading up to the crash aren't clear, police have opened a criminal investigation, at least in part due to the fact that the driver didn't remain at the scene.

Police haven't publicly identified the person of interest they've uncovered in the case but did say they have one in mind. Investigators are still hoping anyone who witnessed the crash or who has any information about it to call Lieutenant Austin Dunn at 770-719-4207.
