POLK COUNTY, Ga. -- Police have requested the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's assistance in investigating the death of a 21-month-old girl.

Ella Gracye Pointer died Sunday afternoon after being airlifted to Children's Hospital at Egleston on Saturday.

Ella Gracye was in the care of two men when she was hurt. Police have not released details about what happened to her but family members said emergency workers made disturbing discoveries.

Shellby Garner, the child’s mother, said she was working the third shift when she got a call that her daughter had stopped breathing.

“She was gone for 30 minutes and they revived her. Her heartbeat was all hers,” Garner said. “But she was already gone. Her body was there, but she was already gone.”

"They told us that she had sustained major brain injuries. Major organ injuries. Sexual abuse," said Joy Shell, the child’s grandmother.

Police have not made any arrests in connection with her death, however, 27-year-old Dustin Putnal was arrested for violating his probation. Putnal is the boyfriend of the child's mother.

The identity of the other man present has not been released.

On Tuesday, Polk County Police Chief Kenneth Dodd requested that the GBI assist in the investigation of the death. The police department had previously requested a GBI agent to conduct crime scene processing.

The GBI Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy of Pointer.

Family and friends held a vigil in her memory Monday evening.
