Fire damages vacant home on Buford Highway south of Norcross

Police said the building is normally frequented by vagrants.

A vacant home along Buford Highway was damaged by fire early Monday morning.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — A fire damaged a vacant home and adjacent trees along Buford Highway south of Norcross early Monday morning.

Firefighters went to the home in the 6500 block of Buford Highway around 6:10 a.m. after a call to 911 advised that a fence and trees were burning next to the home.

When they arrived, crews found fire burning on one side of the one-story, wood-frame boarded-up building. Gwinnett County Police told firefighters the building was vacant, but known to be frequented by homeless people.

Equipment dispatched to the fire scene included three engines, one ladder truck, one medic unit, one air and light unit, two battalion chiefs and two fire investigators.

Firefighters knocked down a fire that damaged a vacant house and adjacent trees on Buford Highway in Gwinnett County early Monday morning.

After fire crews were able to make entry to the structure, the remainder of the fire was brought under control and the building was searched for victims.

No one was found inside the building.

According to Gwinnett Fire Chief Russell Knick, the right side of the home received heavy fire damage, while the remainder of the structure was damaged by smoke and heat.

No injuries were reported.

A fire investigator at the scene was able to determine that the fire started in the wooded area adjacent to the right side of the building. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.

During the incident, northbound lanes of Buford Highway near Hillside Drive were shut down. Traffic was fully restored at 8 a.m., according to Knick.
