The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a flood warning for Sweetwater Creek due to recent heavy rain from Tropical Storm Irma.

The rainfall into the creek, which is located in Lithia Springs and Austell, has caused significant runoff into streams and rivers which will cause flooding in some areas, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners said in a news release.

The creek floods at 10 feet.

At 3:00 Tuesday morning, the stage was 6.3 feet and rising, and minor flooding is forecast in areas that regularly flood during heavy rain events, including Woodrow Wilson Park, the lower area of Mt. Vernon Road, Wren Circle Park, and the paintball fields on Blairs Bridge Road adjacent to Interstate 20. Woodrow Wilson Park and Wren Circle Park are designed to be flooded and there are no permanent structures within these parks that will be negatively affected by this flood event, authorities said.

Sweetwater Creek is forecasted to rise near 12.3 feet. Homes should not be affected by the floodwaters.

Douglas County Emergency Management, Sheriff’s Department, and Fire/EMS are monitoring the floodprone areas, and will block off roadways when appropriate.
