BYRON, Ga. -- Officials have confirmed that one deputy is dead and another injured after an officer-involved shooting.

The Telegraph newspaper in Macon reports that two Peach County deputies were shot responding to a domestic incident Sunday evening.

That's when the suspect, later identified as Ralph Stanley Elrod, opened fire shooting both and ultimately killing 41-year-old Patrick Sondron.

Authorities say the other deputy, Daryl Smallwood, is in critical condition.

Police have one person in custody who was also injured by return gunfire.

11Alive sister station WMAZ reports that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrived at the scene to investigate.

The shooting happened in the area of Byron, Ga. - a city of approximately 3,000 south of Macon.

WMAZ reports that the shooter opened fire as soon as deputies arrived.

GBI Special Agent In Charge J.T. Ricketson told the station's reporters that his agency is taking out a search warrant in connection with the case, but did not elaborate.

County officials told The Telegraph that the shooting happened in the area of Hardison Road near Ga. Highway 42.
