GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Hall County deputies, who are investigating a string of boat robberies, were able to arrest 2 men for stealing a boat off Lake Lanier.

Deputies worked with the Timberidge homeowners' association in Gainesville, Georgia to identify the suspects. A resident's surveillance video captured a man who appeared to be involved in suspicious activity around the boat dock.

That man was later identified as 46-year-old Donald Ray Ladd who showed up at the dock while the investigation was underway.

Ladd was arrested at the scene and charged with the theft of a 2007 Sun Chaser pontoon boat.

Police also arrested 56-year-old Bruce Michael Vandervoet, who lived in the Timberidge subdivision. Both are charged with theft by taking.

Since late June, seven watercraft have been reported stolen from the area. All boats have been recovered.

Police believe the ignition switches were manipulated so they could be taken away from the docks where they were tied. Most were stripped of any valuable items before being abandoned.

Investigators are still working to see if Ladd and Vandervoet are involved in the other boating thefts. They are also looking to identify anyone else who could be involved.

Anyone with information regarding these cases is asked to contact Investigator Giaquinta at 770-531-6879.
