Hall County crematorium damaged by fire

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- A Hall County crematorium suffered damage, Friday, after high heat sparked a fire in the attic.

According to Gainesville Fire spokesperson Keith Smith, the fire happened around 6 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home when heat from a cremation caused bracing for the smokestack to catch fire. The fire spread into the attack leaving heavy smoke and fire by the time firefighters arrived.

Crews were able to knock down the fire in about 10 minutes and no one was injured. However, the building and electrical system did sustain some damage.

Electricians and contractors were already on the scene by the time firefighters left around 8:30 p.m. The building must pass inspection by a building instructor before it can be reopened.
