Illegal street race ends in death, charges and one teen's arrest

One driver was treated and released to the Hall County Jail after a race ended with the death of his passenger late Monday evening.

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Police believe a failed street race is responsible for an accident that killed one in Hall County late Monday.

Police in Gainesville, Georgia confirmed that they responded to Millside Parkway near Mundy Mill Road at around 11:45 p.m. to investigate the crash.

There, they learned that 19-year-old Brandon Eduardo Sanchez of Gainesville was headed south on Millside Parkway while racing another vehicle. But Sanchez lost control crossed the median and struck a tree. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center and was later released. However, his passenger 17-year-old Jesus Martinez Mondragon, was confirmed dead at the scene.

Sanchez now faces charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, reckless driving, racing, failure to maintain lane, striking a fixed object and violation of a class CP license - though more charges could be added soon.

In the meantime, Sanchez sits in the Hall County Jail and police are using the chance to warn the public of high speed and careless driving.
