Gas station clerk who shot, killed suspect won't face charges

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. -- A gas station clerk who shot and killed an attempted robbery suspect has been cleared of all charges.

Douglasville Police said Saturday 19-year-old Jailateef Williams died Friday night at a local hospital after he received a gunshot wound to the head.

Captain Brad Stafford of the Douglasville Police Department said Williams entered the Chevron station in the 6500 block of Bankhead Highway at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and pointed a handgun at the clerk while announcing a holdup.

The store clerk, who has not been identified, pulled out his handgun and fired one shot. That bullet hit Williams in the head.

Police found the 19-year-old outside of the gas station when they arrived. He had tried to crawl away.

Williams was taken to the hospital but died from his gunshot wound two days later.

Regular customer, Darrell Haley, said he worried about the clerk he sees every day, with a smile, from behind the counter.

"He works in a dangerous situation," he said. "He works at a gas station. I mean all hours of the night, people go in; people go out. It is a high-crime area around here. So, I feel right that he has to have a gun to defend himself if it comes down to it."
