Jury selection begins Monday for teen accused of killing decorated veteran

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A widow who had been fighting to put the man accused of murdering her husband behind bars may be one step closer to seeing that happen.

Tarik Vasquez was just 16 years old when prosecutors said he savagely gunned down retired Sgt. Maj. Randy Smith in September 2016. Smith's body was found tossed in a trash can.

Despite being charged with felony murder, Vasquez was granted bond after being held in the Fulton County Jail for only 20 days and allowed to wait for his trial under house arrest. It was a decision that infuriated Smith's widow and wife of 33 years, Angela Powell-Smith.

"Don't let him look at TV and enjoy home," she told 11Alive. "You have people locked up for marijuana and mental health clients locked up in jail, and you have an indicted murderer sitting at home?"

Powell-Smith had been fighting for more than a year to have that bond revoked. Now, with jury selection and a looming trial start date, she may soon be a step closer to seeing Vasquez back in jail.
