Craigslist deal turned bloody in Snellville

The two alleged robbers were surprised when the victim pulled a gun

SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- It started out Sunday as a deal to sell an iPhone 8. It ended with shots fired, a man wounded and two others in the Gwinnett County Jail.

Snellville Police told 11Alive News that two men, Jaylen Holmes and Rayquan Smith - both 21 years old, arranged a deal through Craigslist for the phone with a third man by meeting New Year's Eve afternoon outside the Wells Fargo Bank at 1590 Scenic Highway.

However, Snellville Lt. Kevin Seay said that when Holmes and Smith arrived for the deal, they decided to rob the man rather than make a deal. What they didn't know when they pulled a gun, was that the other man also had one - and he fired, first.

Holmes was shot three times in the arm. Smith wasn't hurt but was arrested shortly afterward when police arrived. Both were charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and commission of a felony while in possession of a firearm.

The other man, whose name was not released, was not charged.
