Barricaded man rips urinal off wall in McDonald's restroom during SWAT standoff

The suspect has been taken into custody but his identify still hasn't been released.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — A suspect is in custody after being involved in a four and a half hour long standoff with SWAT early Tuesday morning.

Police were called to a McDonald's on Sugarloaf Parkway and Cruse Road at around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to police, the man, identified as 36-year-old Derrick Hall, had barricaded himself and was armed with a knife inside the restroom.

The restaurant was evacuated of all staff and customers as police tried to open a line of communication with Hall, but he was uncooperative, according to police.

Employees initially asked Hall to leave when they suspected the man of doing drugs, police said. Instead, he barricaded himself inside the bathroom, and a standoff ensued. During the four and a half hour ordeal, Hall apparently destroyed the restroom, ripping a urinal off the wall and threatening to kill officers.

Around 8:15 a.m., SWAT units used gas inside the restaurant, subduing Hall and allowing officers to arrest him.

Authorities issued two warrants for Hall's arrest, and later charged him with making terroristic threats and criminal trespass. Hall, who police said had been arrested multiple times before in Gwinnett County, was taken to the hospital for an evaluation before being transported to the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
