LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Gwinnett County police are investigating a fatal shooting on Mayfield Farms Drive.

Police said a 20-year-old resident of the two-story home had gone upstairs for the night when he heard a noise.

"He had his firearm when he went to investigate the noise, and he ended up confronting an intruder who was breaking into his vehicle," said Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Wilbert Rundles.

Police said the intruder, identified as 50-year-old James Brock, of Gainesville, Ga., was inside the car. The resident challenged him to get out, police said, and the intruder charged at him.

The resident shot Brock multiple times and he died.

Attorney Mike Puglise says this has the essential elements of a self defense case.

"He's not there to sell you girl scout cookies," Puglise said. "He's there to commit a criminal act. And he takes it a step further by attacking you."

Police are still unsure why the suspect decided to target this specific home.
