Lilburn police arrest Maryland fugitive on the run since March

LILBURN, Ga. — Police in Lilburn said they captured a 39-year-old Maryland man who had been on the run since March on Monday night.

According to a police report, when officers discovered a stranded motorist near Killian Hill and Arcado roads, they ran the tags and discovered the registration was expired. The officer asked for the motorist's license, which he didn't have on him. The officer asked for the motorist's name and date of birth. The motorist gave the officer a false name and date of birth.

Then, the report says, the officer called for back-up. At that point, the motorist ran off into the woods. During a foot chase, the motorist began to reach for an object in his waistband or pocket -- later determined to be a .357 Magnum revolver. The officer and motorist grappled, but the motorist was able to break free and run further into the woods.

Additional officers and a K-9 were able to join the foot chase with K-9 Ajax eventually able to stop the subject.

The subject was later identified as Donte Cephas of Baltimore, Md. Cephas was on house arrest for felony firearms possession and had left his home during a check-in last March.

When he was apprehended, he had a gun and balaclava-style ski-mask in his possession.

According to the police report, Cephas has been charged with felony aggravated assault against law enforcement officer when engaged on official duty, two counts of felony obstruction of a law enforcement officer, felony receipt and possession or transfer of a firearm by a convicted felon or first offender, misdemeanor false name, address or birthdate to law enforcement, misdemeanor driving while license is suspended and misdemeanor driving without insurance.
