It all started in 1992 with a challenge.

It was a leap year and a company employee challenged people to use that extra day to make a difference in their community.

TEGNA stations across the country, including 11Alive, will be hosting projects on Saturday, October 22, that serve local needs. Anyone can start a project or join a project by going to makeadifference.com

"It has now grown to over 60,000 volunteers tomorrow will come together across the country in communities small and large to improve the lives of the people in their community through a variety of service projects," said TEGNA CEO Gracia Martore.

11Alive, along with TEGNA, will partner with the Atlanta Mission at My Sister’s House on Saturday.

Employees from 11Alive and their families will make a difference by volunteering at the Atlanta Mission’s Women & Children’s Shelter, “My Sister’s House.”

“The great thing about Make A Difference Day is that it can expose people to needs in our community that they might not be aware existed. It can also demonstrate how easy it is to volunteer and how lives can be changed…for both those being helped as well as for those helping.” said 11Alive President and General Manager John Deushane. “The 11Alive team is honored to be assisting the Atlanta Mission and My Sister’s House in their important roles in serving the homeless in Atlanta.”

"Whether you're putting a lemonade stand or building bikes and bears, we welcome everyone to join us," said Martore.
