ATLANTA - An Atlanta Police officer tried to stop a man walking on the 500 block of Joseph E. Lowery Blvd. SW, but the man took off running and was hit by a vehicle.

An APD spokesman said while fleeing the officer, the man crossed the westbound lanes of I-20, jumped the median wall then crossed the eastbound lanes before he was hit around 2:30 Friday morning. The driver pulled over further down the highway.

The man fractured his lower right leg and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and is listed in critical condition. However, police said he is expected to survive his injuries.

He faces charges of possession of narcotics and obstruction.
