ATLANTA -- Police say a man was shot and killed at an east Atlanta apartment complex Monday afternoon after he came home to find his apartment being burglarized.

Officers responded to a person shot call around 1:15 p.m. after a caller reported hearing multiple gunshots from one of the floors at the Alexan EAV apartments on Metropolitan Avenue SE.

An initial investigation revealed that the victim and a friend had just arrived at his home to find the door ajar. When the victim entered the apartment, police said he found a suspect going attempting to rob the place.

Police said the victim and the suspect got into some sort of altercation, leading the suspect to shoot the victim, who died at the scene.

The gunman got away, but investigators now need help identifying a man caught in a neighbor's surveillance video. Police think the man could shed some light on the incident.

Lt. Charles Hampton with Atlanta Police Department's Homicide unit said they are not sure of his involvement at this time, but said authorities would like to question him.

"What we do know was that he was in the area prior to the homicide," Hampton said. "We're asking anyone who recognizes this individual to come to homicide or call CrimeStoppers."

Police are also interviewing the victim's friend to try to gather any additional information, and the investigation is still ongoing
