Police: 12-year-old girl shot while sleeping in South Fulton

Police said the girl was transported to the hospital and was conscious, alert, and breathing.

SOUTH FULTON, GA. - A 12-year-old girl was shot while she was sleeping in her home early Thursday morning.

Fulton County police said the shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. in the 6400 block of Connell Road off Flat Shoals Road. When police arrived on scene they observed several bullet holes in and around the home.

Initial information from police said the bullet that hit the girl and grazed her leg came from outside of the home.

Police said when she was transported to the hospital, she was conscious, alert, and breathing. She was treated and released before noon on Thursday.

Fulton County police said the shooting is still under investigation and there are no suspects or motive at this time.

A NEIGHBORHOOD UNDER FIRE

This is the latest in a string of shootings in the Pointer Ridge subdivision. Between Nov. 7 and Nov. 10, there were three shootings reported where police found more than 240 shell casings.

Police have not made any arrests in any of the shootings and no injuries were reported. The map below shows where the incidents happened and details from police.

On Nov. 6, a man was asleep in his home on Cedar Hurst Trail when he a barrage of gunfire woke him up. When police arrived, they discovered that several windows in the home and the home's siding had bullet holes. The victim was not harmed and according to the police report, witnesses saw several people standing in front of a home firing into it. More than 130 shell casings from both handguns and rifles were found.

On Nov. 8, offenders threw Molotov cocktails inside of a home on Woodford Rd., causing extensive damage and the roof to collapse, according to the police report. Police also located more than 30 shell casings outside of the home. No one was inside the home when the fire and shooting happened.

On Nov. 10, a family was inside of their home when bullets from an automatic rifle were fired into their home. A mom, dad and three children were inside the home when the shooting happened. The family told police the mom and 13-year-old daughter were in the kitchen when "They began hearing gunshots and bullets flying past them striking doors and walls."

Police investigated and found that the shots came from a vacant property behind the home. There police found, " 87 shell casings ranging from 5.56/.223 caliber to 7.62 caliber," according to the police report. A bullet hole was also found inside another nearby home.

Community members are holding a meeting in Creel Park Thursday night in response to the most recent shooting that injured the 12-year-old. The South Fulton mayor, along with a representative from the District Attorney's office are expected to be in attendance. The meeting is set to begin at 6 p.m. and last until 8 p.m.
