Suspect charged after hitting officer escorting funeral procession

Driver got out of the vehicle, 'struggled with several civilians' and was arrested

ATLANTA -- A MARTA police officer was transported to the hospital after being struck on Friday.

According to Atlanta police, the officer was helping to lead a funeral procession when he was hit on Fairburn Road near Thompson Drive.

The officer appeared to have sustained serious injuries.

Atlanta police said the officer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital and was listed in stable condition.

After the accident, police said the driver of the van, later identified as 52-year-old John Waid, got out of the vehicle and "struggled with several civilians" and was arrested.

No other detail was immediately available.

Waid was charged with interrupting a funeral procession, open container of alcohol and failure to yield.
