LAGRANGE, Ga. -- A person trapped inside of a house that was on fire Monday night perished in that fire. The only other person inside the home was able to escape with a dog, according to LaGrange Fire Department.

Three dogs, one cat and a bird also died in the fire.

Just after 10:30 Monday night, firefighters arrived to the scene of a single-story house on fire on the 1000 block of Dunson Street. Smoke was heavy and flames were seen blowing from the rear of the home, according to a press release from the fire department.

"Firefighters encountered intense heat and heavy smoke conditions inside the structure. Firefighters were able to locate the fire victim a short time later and removed the victim from the residence," the release states.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire around 11:00 p.m. and found the dead animals during a search.
The house is described as having extensive fire, heat, smoke, and water damage and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the LaGrange Fire and Police Departments.
