A man accused of kidnapping an elderly woman and trying to rob another person was arrested after an overnight manhunt Monday, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The GBI said 29-year-old John Calhoun, whose photo was released by authorities Sunday night, was arrested after a chase Monday morning near Monroe. Calhoun suffered minor injuries in the wreck.
The GBI said Calhoun was one of four suspects who were the subject of an overnight door-to-door search in the Exchange Boulevard area of Bethlehem, Ga., after they said an 81-year-old woman was kidnapped from her house and locked in her trunk on Sunday. Other suspects remained at large.
The Barrow County Sheriff's Office said another victim was assaulted Monday morning at a nearby construction site in conjunction with the crime spree, but additional details were withheld, pending notification of family members, as that victim's injuries were extensive.
After the Sunday carjacking incident, the suspects were involved in a brief police chase with deputies from the Walton and Barrow County sheriff's departments. That chase ended in a crash near the Gateway 12 Movie Theater in Bethlehem. The suspects fled, leading to the overnight manhunt.
That incident followed a string of car thefts across the western part of Walton County. The Walton County Sheriff's Office said at least one suspect had been arrested in relation to those thefts, but the others had escaped.
Calhoun's charges, according to the GBI, include at least two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated battery, two counts of armed robbery, two counts of vehicle theft, two counts of elder abuse, one count of burglary, one count of kidnapping, one count of financial transaction card fraud and additional charges.
The GBI's investigation remains active and ongoing.
