DeKalb Firefighters battled heavy flames at the Shallowford Garden Apartments early Tuesday morning.

The apartment complex is located at 3630 Shallowford Road.

One firefighter was examined for possible heat exposure. None of the residents were injured.

Five apartments were destroyed laving 19 people without a home.

The Red Cross responded to help with emergency needs such as food, clothing and shelter. Caseworkers will continue to work with the families to help them get back on their feet.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
