Implosion of the Georgia Dome

A date to implode the rest of the Georgia Dome was announced Wednesday afternoon.

The Dome’s remaining Gate B and east wall will be demolished on Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 1 am.

Most of the dome was imploded on Nov. 20, but the implosion left a small part of the structure still standing.

According to the Georgia World Congress Center, the new time for demolition was chosen due to ancillary events on the GWCCA campus. It was also the earliest date to allow for "inward fall zone and efficient clean up." Lastly, there would be minimal disruption to traffic, MARTA operations and surrounding businesses.

A traffic suspension on Northside Drive will be in place from 12:30-1:30 am. Traffic will be re-routed at Ivan Allen Blvd. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

MARTA Rail service from Five Points to Vine City will be suspended beginning at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, with bus shuttle service available as an alternative.
