CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Police have confirmed that a 12-year-old boy is in serious condition after accidentally being shot by another child.
Clayton County police initially said that the child was conscious and alert after when he was air lifted to an area hospital. However, in an update later in the evening, officials said the child was in surgery and listed as serious.
Police initially responded to the call around 3:30 p.m. on Fitzgerald Road near Hemlock Way where they learned that a 12-year-old boy was shot by an 11-year-old.
They later learned that the two and a 10-year-old were playing together when they found and removed the gun from inside the home.
Police believe the 11-year-old was trying to return the weapon to its original location when it discharged struck the 12-year-old at least once.
Police arrived to find the children with an adult family member who was in another area of the home when the incident happened.
At this point, police do not yet know who the gun belongs to and do not know if charges will be pending for anyone involved.
As the victim and apparent shooter are both juveniles, they are not being identified by police.
Officials said the investigation is still ongoing.
