Severe weather possible later today

With a little daytime heating this afternoon, scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible. A few storms could become strong or severe.

After recording 1.55" officially at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport, we now wait for the chance to see scattered showers and storms form this afternoon.

A few storms have the potential to be strong or severe.

A warm front will drift to the northeast giving us the chance to warm up into the upper 70s and lower 80s this afternoon.

The atmosphere will likely begin to become unstable.

The extra instability, which is an ingredient that is needed to help develop and intensify thunderstorms, will likely be the key to determining how intense the storms could become.

The storms that fire up will be the result of a cold front to our west.

Timing: 3 p.m. (4/23/18) to midnight

Impacts: Severe storms will be capable of producing damaging winds (50-60 mph wind gusts), isolated tornadoes, and some hail.

The Storm Prediction Center has a marginal risk (1 out of 5 threat) for parts of Central Georgia shown in green in the graphic above.

The most likely areas that could see a few strong or severe storms will be areas along I-75 and I-16.

A marginal risk means isolated severe thunderstorms are possible. The tornado risk is low, but not zero.

Our short-term models indicate the best time to see strong to severe storms will be this evening and even after sunset. The severe threat should diminish by midnight with a few lingering showers possible overnight.

Make sure you have ways to receive warnings this afternoon and evening in case the weather becomes active.
