ATLANTA – An Atlanta Police sergeant is in the hospital recovering after he was run over in southwest Atlanta early Wednesday morning.

Officials say it happened after the sergeant tried to conduct a traffic stop when he noticed an SUV with a headlight out.

When he ran the tag, he discovered the vehicle was stolen.

As he tried to remove the 16-year-old driver from the SUV, police said the driver stepped on the gas, dragging the sergeant with him.

At one point, the SUV’s door knocked the sergeant down, and the teen ran over his leg.

Officers chased the teen down, and he was eventually arrested.
