State Trooper recovering after alleged drunk driver hits him while directing traffic

A Georgia State Trooper was hit by an alleged drunk driver while directing traffic during rush hour Monday morning.

A Georgia State Trooper was hit by an alleged drunk driver while directing traffic during rush hour Monday morning.

Georgia State Patrol trooper Aaron Degourville was directing early morning traffic on SR 369 just west of Bannister road. Degourville, who was wearing a reflective traffic vest, was then hit by a 2003 BMW traveling in the eastbound lane. He broke the lower part of his leg.

According to GSP, the trooper suffered serious injuries as a result.

The driver, David Michael Sommer, 44, of Cumming was charged with DUI, reckless driving, failure to obey authorized person directing traffic and serious injury by vehicle. He is currently in Forsyth County Jail.

TFC DeGourville began his career with the Georgia Department of Public Safety as a Trooper Cadet (DPS) Headquarters in Atlanta in July 2014. Afterwards, he attended the 97th GSP Trooper School. While in trooper school, TFC DeGourville served as the class chaplain. When he graduated in March 2016, he was assigned to Post 37 in Cumming.
