ATLANTA - An Atlanta police sergeant is recovering at Grady hospital Wednesday morning after he was run over.

Capt. Cliff Johnson said the sergeant, whose name is not being release at this time, attempted a traffic stop after he noticed an SUV with a headlight out, ran the tag and it came back stolen. This happened at the intersection of Campbellton Road and Centre Villa Dr. SW around 10:25 a.m.

Capt. Johnson said once the vehicle stopped, the sergeant attempted to pull the 16-year-old driver out of the vehicle and that's when the suspect stepped on the gas, dragging the sergeant with him and hitting a police cruiser. The driver then put the SUV in reverse and hit another police vehicle. The door of the SUV knocked the officer down, then the 16-year-old ran over the sergeant's leg. Officers chased the teen down Campbellton Road until he exited the SUV and took off on foot. Officers were able to capture him near Hammarskjold Drive in East Point .

Capt. Johnson said the teen is a runaway and is wanted on several warrants. The sergeant is in stable condition. "He's being treated right now. He's still under observation. Trying to figure out and make sure everything is ok. He's being x-rayed from the neck down," Capt. Johnson said.

The sergeant has been with the police force for 10 years.
