'This was a life' | Police discover part of infant's remains in Greene County

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

GREENE COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies continue to canvass a rural area of this east Georgia county in hopes of finding out what happened to an infant whose partial remains were discovered Tuesday evening.

Greene County is about an hour east of Atlanta.

According to Greene County Sheriff Donnie Harrison, a homeowner in a rural part of the county called deputies to his yard where his dog had brought the partial remains.

The remains were found on Chester Road in the White Plains area of Greene County.

Since then, investigators and volunteers have searched the area, looking for the rest of the infant's remains. A team of cadaver-trained dogs also searched, but as of Friday night nothing else had been discovered.

"This was a life, and we want to find out what happened," Harrison said.

"I would assume this was probably a secret [that the parents kept], and sometimes people talk to other people about issues they're having. And we're hoping in this case this young lady may have confided in someone," who might be able to contact authorities.

The GBI crime lab confirmed Wednesday that the partial remains were from a newborn's body. Investigators were not able to determine the gender or race, and could not determine how long the baby had been alive, exactly how long the baby had been dead, how the baby died, or whether it had been stillborn.

"We can't say for sure, but [the birth] would have been recent," Sheriff Harrison said. "We have conducted a door-to-door canvass in the area," and checking hospitals, looking for information about recent pregnancies, there.

The woods surrounding the homeowner's house are so dense, the cadaver dogs were having a difficult time climbing through the thick underbrush.

"Obviously, this person who did this was scared or upset, and we just want to clarify everything and find out exactly what happened, and go from there.... It might have been a young mother, we don't know, but we know they were nervous and scared. We want to get that person help."

Anyone with information can leave an anonymous tip at the local CrimeStoppers number, which is 706-453-3366. Harrison also said people can leave information at the sheriff's office at 706-453-1821.
