TIMELINE | Thunderstorms possible ahead of strong front, colder air

At this point, 11Alive's StormTrackers say the risk for severe weather is low, but there still could be a few isolated storms.

A strong cold front will make its way through Georgia Friday, and there is a chance it could bring thunderstorms.

At this point, 11Alive's StormTrackers say the risk for severe weather is low, but there still could be a few isolated storms.

Here's the timeline:

FRIDAY

8:30 a.m.

The line of storms should still be located in Alabama, just across the Georgia state line.

10 a.m.

The storms begin to push into the eastern counties of the greater Metro area, including LaGrange, Peachtree City and Carrollton.

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The rain will start to pick up in Atlanta, and this is when there's a greater chance to see heavy, driving rains, gusty winds, and even brief spin-up tornadoes. Right now, the Storm Prediction Center keeps those chances low, but the National Weather Service in Peachtree City believes the odds are greater.

1 p.m.

Most of the front should be east of Atlanta, and parts of Gwinnett County out to Athens will still be experiencing showers.

5 p.m.

The front should be well to the east near the South Carolina border and out of our area. Gusty winds are still likely.

WEEKEND

Really cold air will be around for the weekend, along with gusty winds up to 35 mph. Wind chill factors on Saturday will feel like the teens most of the day!

The air will stay very cold and dry through next week. Temperatures will be unseasonably cold with lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This cold front is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty winds, and some brief spin-up tornadoes are possible. The temperatures, which have been on the milder side since the start of the week, are expected to drop sharply behind the front.

There may also be a few flurries and accumulating snow behind the front that fall in the northwest part of the state from about Floyd County northward.
