Oconee County Dispatch received the first 911 call around 3:50 Friday morning, alerting them of a wrong way driver on the GA-10 Loop near GA-316.

Moments later, the driver crashed.

Two more 911 calls rolled in, telling police a person, identified as 19-year-old Bridget Thompson, was walking away from the crash scene towards the GA-15/US441.

Once the state trooper made it to the scene, he found Thompson lying dead in the roadway. She was a student at the University of Georgia.

The driver of a Ford F-250, 56-year-old Timothy Mark Rodgers of Lexington, Ga., told the trooper he was traveling in the right lane of the GA-10 Outer Loop when Thompson walked into the roadway. He said the highway was dark and admitted he did not see her until it was too late.

Rodgers was not injured in the crash.

A UGA spokesperson issued a statement Friday morning: "The University of Georgia community mourns the tragic death of Bridget Thompson. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bridget's family and friends."
