Van carrying Emory track and field team crashes in Birmingham

The van was exiting I-459 onto Highway 280 and flipped twice before it landed upside down.

A van carrying Emory University’s men's and women's track and field team overturned Friday morning in Birmingham, Ala.

The van was exiting I-459 onto Highway 280 and flipped twice before it landed upside down.

The group was headed to Birmingham Southern College’s Ice Breaker Meet at the Birmingham Crossplex when the accident happened in the middle of the morning rush hour.

“I didn't even really know what happened all,” said passenger Matthew Jones. “I remember was a big bang and people were screaming and I saw glass flying in slow motion. So it was really scary.”

According to a statement released by Emory University, eight students and two coaches were involved.

One of the team member was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The rest of the traveling party were treated and released at the scene. Those released headed back to Emory, the university said.
