Elderly man critical after rescue from Atlanta house fire

The victim suffered third-degree burns but was conscious and breathing, officials said.

ATLANTA -- A frantic neighbor and the fast action of local firefighters may have been all that stood between an elderly victim and a fiery death in Atlanta on Sunday.

First responders arrived at the home on Kennolia Drive SW within just four minutes where they were quickly warned by a neighbor that someone might still be inside. At this point, the fire was already burning heavily on two sides of the home, officials said.

The moments that followed included an aggressive attack of the flames inside the home as crews searched the area for the victim.

He was found on the floor inside and immediately rescued out the front door. Initial examination showed that the victim had suffered third-degree burns and had inhaled some. He was listed in critical condition but was conscious and breathing when he was rushed from the scene.

Fire officials have not yet released what might have been the cause of the fire.
