Woman killed after pointing gun at officers responding to suicide call

The shooting happened on Robin Hood Place in Marietta.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case after a woman died in an officer-involved shooting, Tuesday.

11Alive's Ron Jones reports that officers were called to the 32-year-old's home on Robin Hood Place in Marietta around 1:30 p.m. to reports of a suicidal woman with a 3-year-old child inside.

Officers said the woman, identified as Talathia Brooks, initially answered the front door, but left and returned several times. The last time she returned, they said, she had a handgun and pointed it at officers.

According to investigators, there were about four officers at the door, when three of them opened fire. Brooks was shot multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. No officers were injured. Police said the woman's 3-year-old daughter may have witnessed the shooting, but was unhurt. She was immediately taken to a nearby neighbor, possibly a family member.

Officials said police have responded to the home multiple times in the past for suicidal threats and officers had no other choice but to shoot.

"So, when the officers responded out here on this particular call, they knew they were going to a location that potentially the threats were coming from that residence and that person inside," officials said.

When asked whether the 32-year-old had ever been treated for a mental illness, police said they were not able to answer that question due to HIPPA laws. Disclosing any information related to that would violate her medical history privacy, they said. However, officials did say at the time of her suicidal threats, she was experiencing a strained relationship with her estranged husband.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, as is standard with any officer-involved shooting.
