Long-time Clayton County mayor dies

Willie Oswalt served his city for almost a half century

LAKE CITY, Ga. -- Willie Oswalt, one of metro Atlanta's longest-serving mayors, passed away Saturday morning.

He was 77.

Oswalt, the mayor of Lake City in Clayton County, held the job since 1988. And, before that, he had served as a city councilman for 14 years. All told, he worked in city government for 44 years.

Lake City Mayor Pro Tem Lorraine Hoover will serve in Oswalt's place until a special election can be held.

Visitation for Willie Oswalt will be from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday at Scruggs Funeral Home in Morrow.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro in the worship center. Internment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Jonesboro.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Salvation Army or the Wounded Warrior Project.
