NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. -- On this weekend when we celebrate our freedom, two veterans in North Tonawanda are making sure we don't forget those who helped protect us and secured that freedom.

Gerald Tidd and Douglas Palmer are accepting donations of canned goods, food coupons, gift cards, and toiletries at Tidd's home. They want to make sure that homeless and hungry veterans can be properly taken care of with those contributions.

"They've done so much for us. It's the least we can do to just sit out here and get some food and toiletries for them," Tidd said.

"I served in the Marines. I'm doing what I can. Both Gerry and I are disabled. And like I said we do what we can," Palmer added.

They will be out collecting for the vets again Sunday and Monday during the midday hours. Tidd has raised tens of thousands of dollars over the years for homeless veterans.

Both Tidd and Palmer are members of the local Sikora American Legion Post 1322 in North Tonawanda, N.Y.
