Jenna Bush Hager gets emotional about grandmother Barbara Bush

'We are grateful for her,' an Jenna Bush Hager said on the TODAY show.

Just a day after the Bush family announced that Barbara Bush was in failing health, her granddaughter described the former first lady as being in "great spirits."

"We are grateful for her," an emotional Jenna Bush Hager said on the TODAY show. "She is the best grandma anybody could of ever had or have. Barbara and I talked to her last night, she’s in great spirits and she’s a fighter, she’s an enforcer."

Bush, the matriarch of the political family, has declined further medical treatment for a life-threatening illness, after consulting with her family and friends.

Bush Hager, said, "She reminded me not to believe everything you read. We’re grateful for her, for everybody’s prayers and thoughts and just know the world is better because she’s in it."

She noted that her grandmother was with her grandfather, former president George H. W. Bush, "the man she's loved for over 73 years."

"They are surrounded by family, but I think the fact that they’re together in this and he still says, ‘I love you Barbie,’ every night is pretty remarkable," she said.
