National Public Radio newscaster Carl Kasell died Tuesday from complications from Alzheimer's disease, NPR has announced. He was 84 years old.

Kasell anchored NPR's newscasts for more than 30 years and then became the official scorekeeper for Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!

Wait Wait host Peter Sagal shared the news on Twitter describing Kasell as "the heart and soul of our show."

Until recently the prize for Wait Wait contestants would be for Kasell to record a message on their voicemail. According to NPR, he recorded more than 2,000 messages since the show's debut in 1998.

In 2014, Kasell announced he would become the show's "Scorekeeper Emeritus."
