Every day in Metro Atlanta, seven women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Metro Atlanta women die of breast cancer more often when compared to women in Georgia and the United States as a whole. Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta works every day to change these statistics and improve breast cancer outcomes in our community. One of the most impactful ways Komen Atlanta combats breast cancer is through our grant process.

Every year, we fund breast health services for those who could not otherwise afford them through our grantmaking process. This year, Komen Atlanta has distributed $1.1 million in grants to 14 community partners in metro Atlanta that align with our focus on breast education and access to screening and diagnostic procedures and treatment support.

These 14 local healthcare organizations will share these grant dollars to address gaps and barriers in accessing breast health services in order to enable our community to detect and survive breast cancer.

The 2017 grant recipients prioritize programs that reach Metro Atlanta’s high-risk and high-need communities, particularly African-American, Latina, recent immigrant and LGBTQ populations. This year’s grant awards of $1.1 million marks the milestone of more than $30 million in grants made by Komen Atlanta since its inception in 1991.

You can find more information on this year’s grant recipients here.

Komen Atlanta’s grant dollars are generated from fundraising events throughout the year such as Race for the Cure, Bubbles and Bling, partner events, sponsorships and donations.

In fact, there is still time to fundraise and participate in Race for the Cure, the largest fundraiser of the year. Due to the I-85 bridge collapse, Race for the Cure has been moved to June 24th to avoid adding congestion in the Buckhead area. We are so grateful for the flexibility shown by all our race attendees, sponsors and partners to make this date change.

Race for the Cure will be held at exactly the same time, 7:30am for the one mile and 8:00am for the 5k, at Lenox Square, with a new date of June 24th. Everyone has more time to register for Race! We’d love teams and individuals to join us on June 24th as well as make donations. These dollars will go to funding next year’s grant awards.
