Patton Oswalt is breaking his silence about the online trolling he and fiancée Meredith Salenger have weathered since announcing their engagement last week.
Oswalt shared a blog post on his Facebook page titled "A Widow’s Rage Defense of Patton Oswalt’s Engagement," praising the piece for defending his marriage news. Oswalt, 48, was previously married to Michelle McNamara, who passed away in her sleep in April 2016.
"This is so amazing," he wrote in the caption. "And SO well-written. I expected some bitter grub worms to weigh in (anonymously, always always always) with their much-needed opinions when I announced my engagement last week. And I decided to ignore them.
"But yeah, I felt this rage," he continued, thanking the blog post's author Erica Roman for her kind words. "And Erica articulated it better than I could have ever hoped. So there you go. Thank you, Erica."
Salenger also shared her take on the article, thanking Oswalt and McNamara's families for their generosity.
"Everyone has been so lovely to us… all of Patton's family… ALL of Michelle's siblings and friends and family… a few trolls have strong opinions," she wrote. "But I think for Patton, having met and found love after over a year of intense therapy and openly grieving and dealing with his pain… I am grateful to be the one who helps him club out of the depths of grief and find some joy again."
Oswalt and Salenger both joked about their engagement last week on social media. "I don't wanna brag... but check out the size of The Rock on my finger!" Salenger posted on Instagram, Photoshopping a picture of Dwayne Johnson over her ring finger.
Oswalt had a similarly jokey account of their engagement. "I put the ring in a marzipan Slave I replica and said, "Will you be my Padawan of Love?" She maced me but said yes later," he tweeted.
