Police: Gunman shoots out hotel door, forces his way into room at gunpoint

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. – A man is behind bars and his motive is unclear after police said he shot out a side entry door to a hotel before forcing his way inside of a room at gunpoint Monday morning.

Henry County Police Major Mike Ireland said they were called to the Hilton Home 2 Suites on Mill Road off of Jonesboro Road at 6:30 a.m. on Monday.

According to police, 43-year-old Shermane Jernine Perkins ran through the woods from his home on Grover Turner Way to the hotel where he then shot out the glass side entry door with a handgun. Once inside, he went to the third floor where police said he forced his way inside a room at gunpoint.

Then he fled through the stairwell where he was confronted by police on the second floor, according to authorities.

The hotel was evacuated during the incident. Captain Joey Smith said employees were confronted by the man but then decided to separate themselves from him as they called 9-1-1.

Police said the man notified employees that someone "was chasing him," from his home but they have not been able to confirm that.

Evidence suggests that he was either under the influence or suffering from a mental disorder.

Captain Smith also revealed that the man was suffering from lacerations on his arms and legs, after running through the woods.

Investigations are underway at both the hotel and Perkins' home.

Perkins is charged with Home Invasion and Aggravated Assault.
