Police: Teen killed husband who pushed wife who was trying to leave him

Police say the victim's wife was getting help from the suspect to pack up and move to South Carolina.

PEACHTREE CORNERS, Ga. – A teenager was arrested after he allegedly shot and killed a man in his apartment.

Police were called to the apartment in Peachtree Corners around midnight on March 4 for a “person shot.” When police arrived, they found a woman who said her husband, 30-year-old Dwayne Pete had been shot.

Officers applied a chest seal to Pete’s injuries and transported him to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Police interviewed Willona, the victim's wife, and 18-year-old Jerry Bennett who was in the apartment helping the woman move out. Police learned the married couple were having marital problems and she was in the process of moving to South Carolina.

Bennett was there to help her move and while in the apartment getting belongings, Pete and his wife got into a verbal altercation, according to police. At one point, Pete pushed his wife. That’s when Bennett entered the room and shot him in the chest, police said.

Both the wife and Bennett applied pressure to Pete’s injuries while waiting for first responders.

The 18-year-old was arrested and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault. He was transported to Gwinnett County Jail.

According to police incident reports, officers had been called multiple times to the home of Willona and Dwayne on domestic issues.

Each report citing arguments that lead to physical altercations but Willona did not press charges, the last report being Feb. 7, a month before the shooting.
