ALPHARETTA, Ga – An online petition has been started that “demands” GOP congressional hopeful Karen Handel debate Democrat Jon Ossoff in the 6th district runoff.

The petition, which can be found by clicking here, was started by Roswell resident Sandra Sidhom, and has gained 268 signatures in less than 24 hours.

“We shouldn’t have to rely on commercials to get our information, and we demand that candidates that wish to represent us in congress debate publicly so we know where they stand on the issues that are important to us,” said Sidhom. “There is support from across party lines, as many voters believe in the importance of debates in a public forum to educate and inform themselves prior to casting their votes.”

Ossoff has been out in front on the debate issue since right after he and Handel finished first and second, respectively, out of a crowded, 18-candidate special election on April 18 to replace Tom Price, now President Donald Trump’s secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Ossoff almost immediately challenged Handel to a series of six debates. On Monday, Ossoff announced he had agreed to three debates, but Handel’s campaign said her debate schedule is still being determined.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is accusing Handel of being afraid to debate Ossoff.

On Tuesday, the Congressional Leadership Fund continued criticizing Ossoff for not actually living in the district that he is seeking to represent on Capitol Hill, as well as his fundraising sources.
