Thousands of pieces of Olympic history are on display in Atlanta.

ATLANTA -- Thousands of pieces of Olympic history are on display in Atlanta.

Tuesday marks the 20th anniversary of the opening ceremony of the Centennial Olympics Games in Atlanta.

More than 6,000 pieces of memorabilia, including torches, medals and other items, are on display at the Atlanta History Center.

The Centennial Olympic Games Museum is a keepsake for a community that for 17 days stood united.

"The pride the citizens of the city felt, the community coming together to create something and staging a successful games,” said Dan Rooney of Atlanta History Center.

The exhibit is set to close for about a year for renovations on August 22.

A special event is planned at the Atlanta History Center on July 30. Attendees will have the chance to win Olympic memorabilia, meet Olympians and explore the museum. That event happens from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for more information.
