Alpharetta dad, son share Father's Day on the US Open course

“It’s a little surreal," explained Chandler Eaton.

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. — For some fathers and their sons, sharing a round of golf is a bonding experience. But for one Alpharetta golfer and his dad, they got to do just that - except it was in a national setting.

On Sunday, Chandler Eaton and his dad spent Father's Day together at the 119th U.S. Open in Pebble Beach, as Eaton's dad Scott caddied for the rising Duke University senior.

“There’s nothing like carrying the bag for your son as an amateur,” Scott told Golfweek. “I still can’t believe it’s happening.”

The outlet reports Chandler is one of only two first-time U.S. Open participants to advance through local and sectional qualifying and make it to the major.

“It feels amazing,” Chandler told Golfweek. “It’s a little surreal. I think I’m starting to feel like I sort of belong out here.”

Chandler ended up tying for 58th, with 5-over par. Gary Woodland captured the U.S. Open overall, holding off two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka for a three-shot victory.

Woodland shot 2-under 69 to become the fifth player to break 70 in all four rounds of the U.S. Open.

Material from the Associated Press appeared in this report.
