Auston Matthews had an historic NHL debut.

Matthews, 19, was the No. 1 pick in the league's draft in June. In his first regular season game Wednesday, he scored four goals, three in the first two periods of the Toronto Maple Leafs' game against the Ottawa Senators.

But what was even more fun to watch was the reactions from Matthews' parents, Ema and Brian Matthews, who were in attendance at the Canadian Tire Center Wednesday night.

They were cute, giving each other a hug and a kiss after their son's first goal.

When Matthews completed the hat-trick, his mom could no longer hold in her emotion, succumbing to tears of joy for her son.

"Those were tears of joy," Ema Matthews said to Sportsnet during the game. "I feel very excited. This is what Auston has been dreaming since he was 6, playing right here in the NHL, so he's doing it. So I'm very excited, very happy for him."

"I am hoping nobody is going to wake me up here anytime soon," Brian Matthews said in the same interview. "This is unbelievable."

"It meant a lot," Matthews said to reporters about his parents. "Pretty special moment, not just for myself but for them, as well. They have been a pretty huge part of getting me to this point, so it was only right for them to be here for the first one."

No rookie has ever scored four goals in his NHL regular season debut. Matthews accounted for all of his team's goals, but they lost 5-4.

If Matthews keeps this up, he would be on pace to break Wayne Gretzky's scoring record (894 goals) in just more than two years. Unlikely, but fun to think about.

Wonder what his mom's reaction would be like then.
